IRS Questions

Helpful information regarding IRS notices, processing, payments, and common tax questions.

IRS Support

Helpful information regarding notices, refunds, payments, and IRS processing.

Below are some of the most common IRS notices and the recommended next steps.

Common IRS Notices

If the IRS requests identity verification, please follow the instructions provided in your IRS notice. Most taxpayers may complete the verification process online using the IRS identity verification tool.

You may need your IRS notice, Social Security Number, and prior tax return information to complete verification.

If the IRS was unable to direct deposit your refund, you may receive a notice asking you to log in to your IRS online account to verify or update your banking information.

Please follow the instructions included in your IRS notice as soon as possible to avoid additional delays.

The IRS may send processing delay notices when additional review time is needed. In many cases, no action is required unless the notice specifically requests information or documents.

Processing delays have become increasingly common and do not necessarily indicate a problem with your return.

If the IRS makes changes to your tax return, you may receive a notice explaining the adjustment. Please provide a copy of the IRS notice to our office so we may review the changes with you.

Do not ignore IRS notices, even if you are unsure whether the changes are correct.

The IRS may reduce or apply your refund toward certain outstanding federal or state debts, including prior tax balances, student loans, or child support obligations.

Please review the IRS notice carefully and contact our office if you have questions regarding the adjustment.

Tax returns may be rejected for several reasons, including identity verification issues, incorrect information, or previously filed returns. Please contact our office so we may review the rejection notice with you.

Processing times vary depending on the filing method, IRS backlog, and return complexity.

In many situations, we may assist with IRS communication after receiving a signed Power of Attorney from you and a retainer.

Once your return has been electronically filed and accepted, processing is handled directly by the IRS.

You may check the status of your federal tax refund directly through the IRS refund tracker below.

You will need your Social Security Number, filing status, and expected refund amount.
